Congratulations to this year’s Landcare Award winner, Paul Cavanagh.

“For outstanding service to Boorowa Community Landcare Group and a passion for holistic and regenerative agricultural practices.”

This year we recognise Paul for his outstanding and longstanding contributions to the Boorowa Community Landcare Group. Paul has been on the Boorowa Landcare Group committee for 11 years, spending 8 of those years as chair. He has volunteered an immeasurable amount of his time to the group and the community.

Paul first started out in Landcare in 1994 when he joined Thuddungra Landcare. The Landcare group had a big focus on sowing trees and agriculture in general. Paul was chair of this group for 6 years before moving on to become chair of the Young Landcare group for a couple of years. He then spent a number of years volunteering to junior Rugby. Paul joined Boorowa Landcare in 2013. He spent a year or 2 in the committee before stepping in the Vice President role, then stepping up as chair of Boorowa Landcare which he has done for 8 years.  Paul has taken a step back in 2025 but remains on the Boorowa Landcare committee. His dedication and time he has given to the group has been incredibly valuable and our whole community has benefited. I asked Paul why he had contributed so much time to Landcare and how it made him feel. He said, “If you’re a primary producer and community member and interested in the environment and agriculture, it’s probably to most logical way to give back to community”.

Pauls motivation with Landcare is to get people talking. By getting people together and talking about profit, economics, environment and socialising in general. He’s particularly proud of be part of the team of people who have kept Boorowa Landcare active and relevant for the community. Making people aware of the benefit of carbon in the soil and the effect in the atmosphere. The grazing group has been another highlight for Paul, which he has been involved with the running of for the past 10 years alongside Linda Cavanagh who managed the group. The grazing group was always so well supported, particularly by farmers in the area.

Paul felt some of the challenges facing Boorowa Landcare were our lack of volunteers due to our small population, which they have overcomes by having an emphasis on education which can be easily managed by the small pool of volunteers. For participants in the group it was recognising that everyone has their own story and hurdles, so we’ve attempted to address these first. By doing this we have done a good job at quietly looking after mental health.

Paul said he has enjoyed his whole time with Boorowa Landcare. He said it’s such an easy thing to be a part of. He encourages others to get involved, even if it’s only as a potential volunteer. He also wanted to thank the coordinators Heather McLeod, Linda Cavanagh, Amber Kelly and the Boorowa Landcare committee members over the years who have run the show. He hopes that going forward Boorowa Landcare can continue to adapt to the needs of the community, get back into our schools, back to the community and get a grazing group back up and running.

We congratulate Paul on his outstanding service to Boorowa Community Landcare Group and his passion for holistic and regenerative agricultural practices.
